Statue of Christ the Redeemer | Maratea
On the summit of the mountain San Biagio in Maratea , which rises steeply above the sea, stands the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, robed in white, a majestic silhouette against the sky. Beneath his arms, outstretched in the Sign of the Cross, lies a panorama of enchanting natural beauty. The great statue, resplendent in its facing of Carrara marble, rivals that of Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. It's 21 Mt. high with 19 Mt. opening arms. The head is 3 Mt. high , watching toward the mountains and not to the sea, like it can seem. In front of the Syatue lies the Sanctuary of San Biagio, formerly a pagan temple dedicated to Minerva.
The breastplate of its patron saint, which escaped the ravages of the iconoclasts, has been preserved in the basilica since 732.
