Medieval borough of Maratea
Maratea is one of Italy's most beautiful beach resorts , with miles and miles of dense forests, clear water, pleasant beaches and coves.
This large territory (surface 6,732 hectares) is situated between the Campania to North and the Calabria to South ; 32 km of Tyrrhenian coast where the mountains rise steeply from the sea and the coastline is completely unspoilt by modern buildings, offering various and charming landscapes . The mounts Cerreta (1,083 m.), Coccovello (1,505 m.), Saint Biagio (644 mt.) and Crivo (1,288 mt.) delimit from the West towards East the main valley and they protect from the cold wind of north.
The coast is studded with bathing establishments and public beaches and its water has consistently been rated among the cleanest in Europe, thanks to Municipality purification system. The seabed is rocky and drops off very near the shore, making it ideal for snorkelling and diving. It's possible swimming in many of the grottos that line the rocky shores; rent a boat or arrange to take one of the local fishing boats from the harbour to visit some of them. As well, the coast is also the chain of eight square towers strategically erected on headlands and high ground, as look-out posts and defences against the raiding Saracens and corsairs
On the coast, from north towards South, the respective hamlets are Acquafredda, Cersuta, Fiumicello-Santa Vènere, Port, Marina and Castrocucco. Towards the inside, to east of the mount San Biagio, they are the hamlets of Mass, Brèfaro and Santa Caterina; to the west of the same mount, Curzo and Campo.
The municipality of Maratea is a satellite system of villages around to the original urban nucleus of Maratea called CENTRO STORICO . It’s situated on the side south of the valley, 310 mt. s.l. , and it clings to the side of Mount San Biagio , sheltering under the protective arms of the 22 metre high, Carrara marble statue of Christ the Redeemer, which stands at the top of the mountain.
The medieval town is small but beautiful , like a urban museum , with narrow winding streets opening out here and there into picturesque little squares, and lined with loggias, ornate portals and small shops selling local food specialities and crafts, which include lace, wooden objects and colourful ceramics. There are interesting shops to browse in, several selling antiques, wine shops, handmade craft , boutique.
